Alvin Ailey Jr was born in Texas in 1931 and moved to California, where he began to study dance. He studied under influential dancers and choreographers; he eventually became the artistic director of the Horton Dance Company. After moving to New York to continue his career, he founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and established his reputation as one of America’s preeminent choreographers. Alvin Ailey was a homosexual. Although he never married, he was the longtime partner of Socialist politician David McReynolds during the 1950s.
