The First Greeks (Up to 800 BC) The Greek peninsula has been inhabited by many different peoples throughout prehistory (before writing). All we know of those peoples are what we dig up through archeology. Their buildings, their fireplaces, their pottery, their weapons, food scraps, plant seeds, etc. Based on that evidence we know those people were mainly of Indo-European descent. Indo-European is a very broad grouping of people’s based on language and includes modern peoples all across Europe and India. Between the period 2000 BC to 1000 BC the Greek peninsula was populated by a variety of peoples including the Mycenaean (of Homer’s epic), Minoans (from Crete) and others. The Mycenaens and Minoans were smaller but not insignificant players in the scene of the Ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamia (Iraq), Persia (Iran), Turkey (Asia Minor).
