When you’re starting to build a wardrobe, the first suit you buy should be a solid dark blue. Some might find this boring, but a solid dark blue works for more occasions than any other style. Also, make sure it’s wool. Good quality men’s suits are made of a wool fabric called “worsted.” The wool in this type of material has been spun into a thread (as opposed to yarn, which is loosely spun) and woven (as opposed to being knitted, as wool sweaters and socks are). I suggest looking for a sale at a good men’s clothing store or good department store such as J.C. Penney. There’s a decent chance you’ll be able to get a $400 or $500 suit at half price if you look around. It will look good and last, and thus be a wise investment. You’ll also need a pair of black dress shoes, black and blue dress socks, a few silk ties, and at least one cotton white dress shirt.
