Who treats periodontal disease?
Your family dentist usually detects periodontal disease and treats it in the early stages. Some family dentists acquire the additional skill and expertise to treat more advanced stages of the disease. If the dentist feels that you need the care of a specialist, you will be referred to a periodontist. Periodontists have had a minimum of two to three years of extensive advanced training in the treatment of many varieties of periodontal diseases. Periodontists also are trained to improve cosmetics (the outward appearance of your teeth) through periodontal plastic surgery and to place dental implants. Periodontics is one of the eight specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
