Who thought up the idea of clowns?

G’day Sexy in my mind, Thank you for your question. I was tempted to say some clown thought of it. :>) However, the clown has evolved over time from the court jester of ancient and medieval times. They then became part of the Commedia Del Arte in the 16th century. They were part of the theatre in Shakespeare’s time and Shakespeare had clowns in his company. There is reference in Hamlet to clowns only speaking what is written for them which is a criticism of one of his clowns for ad libbing. From there, clowns became part of carnivals and then circuses. The first circus clown appeared in England in 1805. It was then adopted by comics for the movies such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. I have attached sources for your reference.
