Who takes ESL courses through the English Department at UML?
Students are placed by one of the methods above into an ESL course because their writing is marked with a significant degree of error related to the influence of a language other than English. Students must be matriculated in an undergraduate full-time day school program. We do not allow graduate students in our ESL courses. Students may not audit ESL courses or take them with a pass/fail option. Beyond this basic definition, our ESL students are so widely varied as to make a description difficult! Many of our students are multi-lingual, and are literate in multiple languages. Our students include: new international students ? from foreign countries (predominantly countries in which English is not the primary language) and who have never attended any school in the U.S.; students who, prior to being at UML, have studied English only as a foreign language.
