Actually, it was France. They were attempting to reform their colony of French Indochina after WWII when it was broken into 4 parts. The North went communist, the French Bailed on the idea, then the US came in to train the South Vietnamese Army. As the war escalated by the Soviet Union’s aid to the North, we increased our commitment until we were doing most of the fighting.
