Who should take the EPI?

Non-native English speaking students must fulfill an oral proficiency requirement before becoming a teaching assistant. The EPI is one alternative for them to demonstrate their proficiency. Prospective TAs who are non-native speakers of English are encouraged to demonstrate oral English proficiency prior to arriving on campus. The University will accept scores from the following tests: Test of Spoken English (TSE), Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Scores from the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) administered at Illinois will also be accepted. In addition, the University of Illinois administers the English Proficiency Interview (EPI) on campus.
