Who should receive the Synagis shots?
-Children with BPD (bronchopulmonary dysplasia) less than 24 mo. old -Premature birth less than 35 weeks, less than 6 months at onset of RSV season -Those babies with congenital heart disease less than 24 mo old at onset of RSV season with significant cyanotic heart disease, congestive heart disease on medication, or with pulmonary hypertension When do the shots start and where do they go to get them? These special shots are given through the Neonatal Intensive Care Units/hospitals or doctors offices beginning in November through March as monthly injections into the muscle of the thigh. How does the shot work? The shot gives the baby antibodies to help kill the virus when they are exposed or make the infection significantly milder.
