Who should have breast MRI for implant rupture?
The FDA has not advocated the use of imaging studies specifically to screen women for implant rupture. Screening mammography (performed on women of appropriate age) may demonstrate findings which suggest implant rupture. This may prompt further evaluation. In addition, women with signs or symptoms of implant rupture may be referred for breast MRI. Usually mammography is performed prior to referral for MRI. Breast sonography is an alternative imaging test for possible implant rupture. How is the MRI study for implant rupture performed? The patient lies on her stomach on a specially designed scanning table with openings for the breasts. The scan is painless and takes less than 30 minutes. There are no injections or medications.
