Who should get mammograms?
For women at average risk, annual mammograms should start at age 40. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer (for example, if your mother or sister had breast cancer before menopause), you should begin screening earlier—typically 10 years younger than the age at which your relative developed breast cancer, but not before age 25. If you do have a higher than average risk, you should consider additional screening tests such as breast ultrasound or breast MRI.
