Who Should Consider Testing for Tamoxifen Response?
The 2D6 gene test for tamoxifen response is considered appropriate for postmenopausal women who are taking or considering taking tamoxifen to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. Knowing their genetic status, women can work with their physician to perhaps take into consideration other equally effective treatments, such as aromatase inhibitors. Until more data is gathered for these specific patient populations, tamoxifen response testing may not be appropriate for: • Women who are pre- or perimenopausal. Why? Because there are no hormonal treatments that are equally as effective as tamoxifen for these women • Women with hormone-negative cancers. Why? Tamoxifen is only recommended as a treatment for hormone positive cancers. • High-risk women who have not had breast cancer. Why? There is not enough data about this situation to make recommendations at this time.
