Who should be notified about shark sightings?

0

Only sharks which are threatening human safety should be reported on the emergency 000 number. Other shark sightings are recorded and collated by Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) Fisheries. Although these sightings are seldom verified or confirmed any person wishing to report a shark sighting – that is not life threatening – can call FISHWATCH on 1800 065 522. About 30 shark species are known to be dangerous to humans and about 20 of these can be found in Australian waters, yet most attacks are attributed to only four species; Tiger Sharks, White Pointers (Great Whites), Bull Sharks and Bronze Whalers. In South Australia the most common species implicated in shark attacks is the Great White.
