Who Should Avoid Water Exercise?
You should avoid water exercise if you have an infection, incontinence, fever, or severe heart failure. Also, if your eyesight is too limited to perceive the instructor’s demonstrations, you would probably neither enjoy nor benefit from a water exercise therapy program. Likewise, if you have suffered a stroke, and it left you with a severely impaired sense of balance, you would not be a good candidate for exercising in water. Finally, if you have osteoporosis or low-bone density, be aware that, because of the buoyancy of the water, this type of exercise may not be as effective in building bone as weight-bearing land-based exercises. However, you may still want to pursue a water exercise program to gain strength and balance.
