Who sells “slow-release” fertilizers?
— J.Z., Longview M.B.: Just about every independent nursery in our state now carries slow-release lawn fertilizers and many of the chain and big box stores do as well. You may be confused about the term “slow release.” This refers to the availability of the nitrogen. Most but not all of the slow-release nitrogen is from an organic source that will release the nutrients more gradually into the soil. Quick-acting lawn foods give almost instant green results, but the down side is that the excess nitrogen not used by the roots gets flushed into our groundwater. For healthier soil, a lawn that stays green longer and better water quality, you should commit to slow-release nitrogen. Brand names to look for include Whitney Farms, Ringer, Dr. Earth, Garden in Bloom, Lily Miller and Uncle Malcom’s. Q: I had beautiful geraniums in my pots on my deck last summer. This month I am hosting a bridal shower and would like to have flowers in my container gardens. The geraniums died over the winter. Wha
