Who sang the song “You Are So Beautiful” on American Idol last night?
Daniel J. Gokey (born April 24, 1980), known as Danny Gokey, is an American singer and church music director from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a finalist on the eighth season of American Idol. Gokey rose to national fame with his participation in the eighth season of American Idol. He was recently nominated in his state of Wisconsin for a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) award for Best Christian/Gospel Artist of the Year. However, he lost to Chad James, a local Christian artist in April 2009 during his run on Idol. On ‘contestants’ choice’ round Danny Gokey sang “You Are So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker on “American Idol” May 12. The audience seemed to enjoy his performance. “You Are So Beautiful” ” is a song written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher. It was first recorded by Preston and made popular in a version by Joe Cocker.
Danny Gokey definitely came in second on the night. He stumbled a bit on Paula’s pick for him, Terrence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister,” with Simon hating the dancing (it wasn’t that bad) and nothing super-creative out of it. But his version of Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” put his own spin on a great choice for his vocal tone. I’m telling you, if Danny belts out a few songs like that in the finals, he could give Adam a run for his money — it was cheesy, but made people happy.
