He sang a weak version of Hero from Chad Kroeger, and he probably bought his ticket home from that performance which makes me sad because I like this guy. In any case, Michael Lynche will be on tour for American Idol this summer, where he’s sure to receive plenty of accolades. “Hero” is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, and recorded for Carey’s fourth album, Music Box (1993). Its protagonist declares that even though we may feel discouraged or down at times, in reality we are “heroes” if we look inside ourselves and see our own inner strength; in time, this will help us “find the way.” It was released as the album’s second single in the fourth quarter of 1993 and became a worldwide commercial success. “Hero” is considered one of Carey’s signature songs, and she regularly performs it when invited to charity events and closes most concerts with it. Before auditioning for “Idol,” Michael Lynche compiled a book of 200 plus songs he could perform if he were to make it on the show. He sang one of those songs tonight, going with Nickelback’s Hero. The song just never really worked for me, as it is exactly the opposite of what I would have expected from Lynche on a night like tonight. He has done extremely well with a number of emotional songs throughout the competition, but he chose to stray from that on a night that really called for it. Randy and Ellen enjoyed his performance, while Simon and Kara thought it was the wrong song choice, both due to its theme (Simon said it felt artificial because the night was supposed to be inspirational songs and Hero comes from the film Spiderman, so it didn’t really fit the bill…an interesting point), and the overall tone of the song. Lynche was great last week, so I don’t think this will hurt him much, but it was not his best performance.
