According to Jeffrey Russell, a UCSB history professor, it was not the belief of most people during the renaissance, but was a myth spread by American author Washington Irving. The origin of the idea that the earth was flat, according to Russell, was an attempt that was made to discredit Christianity in an age of respect for science. Revelation 7:1 has been used by some to try to make a flat earth a biblical position.
