This is part of the continuing series of historical articles to highlight the Mendocino Heritage Days from May 5 through May 14. Cemeteries are the final resting place of the dead. They have been important throughout history from the building of the pyramids, the catacombs of Rome and even Mendocino’s cemeteries. Cemeteries constitute a memento of great achievements of the common everyday people that lived and worked in our communities, leading to the creation of a better place for those that followed. And although the people resting in the cemeteries are dead, their stories are not. Each year the 8th grade at Mendocino Middle School create grave rubbings as a tool to learn history. This school year they visited Little River Cemetery to learn the stories of its residents. At first the students thought it was “kinda creepy,” visiting a graveyard.
