Who Runs the Union in Collier County?
Beginning last September 15, EIA ran several stories on the coup detat in Collier County, Florida. Building stewards from the local education support personnel union, representing about 400 workers, run their own meetings and evidently represent the majority of the membership, but the union president and his supporters have the bank account, financial records, and the backing of the Florida Education Association (FEA). FEA is seeking a court injunction against the stewards, but has been unsuccessful so far. On the other side, the stewards are supporting an investigation of the locals finances, being conducted by the state attorneys office. FEA plans to heal the schism by holding new elections next month, but the stewards dont trust the state union to hold a fair and impartial vote. In the meantime, member representation is at a standstill because the district must recognize the FEA faction, though most of the stewards are in opposition. 7) Scheduling Note.
