Who regulates the regime?
Local authorities are the principal regulator. They decide if there are reasonable grounds for inspection of land, conduct the initial inspection and determine whether the land is radioactive contaminated land. The Environment Agency has a complementary role. We share information with the local authority on land where we have concerns that land might be radioactive contaminated land and we carry out intrusive investigation of land when the local authority asks us. If the local authority determines that the land as radioactive contaminated land, then we are responsible for making sure appropriate remediation is carried out.
