Who regulates Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM)?
Federal Regulatory Agencies: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is responsible for developing and enforcing regulations necessary to protect the general public from exposure to airborne contaminants that are known to be hazardous to human health. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) is responsible for the health and safety of workers who may be exposed to asbestos in their work place, or in connection to their jobs. NJ State Regulatory Agencies: Department of Health and Senior Services The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is the lead agency for the asbestos and environmental health information in NJ. The Indoor Environments Program administers the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), provides site audits and a Quality Assurance/Quality Control program for asbestos abatement in schools.
