Afghanistan has been ravaged by fighting for centuries, interspersed by periods of relative peace every now and then. Beginning in the late 1970’s there was a civil war going on between the Marxist/Communist government and the Various tribal groups who, being mostly Muslim, declared themselves to be Mujahideen or holy warriors against the ungodly communists in power. These tribal groups were also prone to fighting each other as much as anyone else and it was often the case that there was little or no co-operation or co-ordination between the groups. The fact that the government was seen as ungodly meant that for once all the tribal fighters had a common enemy. The government, seen by some as a Soviet puppet government, asked the Russians for help which is why they invaded. Following the invasion the scene was set for lots of other countries to get involved by supplying arms, equipment, money and training.
