Who really designed and made the 1st flags of the American Revolution?
Was it the patriots Francis Hopkinson, Margaret Manny, Elizabeth Betsy Ross, Rebecca Young (Grand Union Flag maker), or someone else? Our first unofficial revolutionary flag was the Continental Colors or Grand Union Flag. It was in use on Jan 1, 1776 and July 4, 1776. It contained 13 stripes with the King’s Colors in the canton area. The King’s Colors were similar to the British Union Jack we all know today. Who sewed the first flag of the revolution that resembles our current flag? Rebecca Flower Young most likely did or Margaret Manny. Who used that flag? George Washington did. FYI, Rebecca’s daughter, Mary Young Pickersgill, and her daughter, Caroline Pickersgill Purdy, made the large Star Spangled Banner (SSB) flown at Fort McHenry in 1814. It is unfortunate that the Grand Union Flag did not have the first stars on it. Otherwise, it would be documented which lady sewed the first US flag. Who the heck was Margaret Manny?
