Who Qualifies to Receive IHSS?
To be eligible for the IHSS Program a person must; • Receive or be eligible to receive SSI/SSP or Medi-Cal benefits • Be 65 years old or over, or legally blind, or disabled by Social Security standards • Live in his/her own home • Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful resident of the State of California Other Criteria: • Income: A person whose income is above the SSI/SSP limits may be required to pay for a portion of his/her IHSS benefits. This is called a “Share of Cost”. • Personal Property: An applicant’s personal property may not exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. Property that is counted includes cash, checking and savings accounts, the value of stocks, bonds, trust deeds, real property, additional automobiles and recreational vehicles, promissory notes and loans. Property that is not counted includes the home the person owns and lives in, one automobile and all life insurance polices if the combined face value is not more than $1,500.
