The role of the Artful Dodger was played by Jack Wild. He was born on 30th September 1952. His role in Oliver! Earned him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In the 1970s, he began a music career, and produced an album for Capital Records and two more for Buddah Records. The film Oliver! is based on the novel (entitled Oliver Twist) by Charles Dickens. Ron Moody and Oliver Reed played the roles of Fagin and Bill Sikes, and Mark Lester played the lead role of Oliver. The film came after the stage production. Oliver! won an Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won several Oscars including Best Director, Best Music and Score of Musical Picture. It also received a string of nominations. Jack Wild was a heavy smoker and battled with alcoholism. He died on 2nd March 2006, after losing his fight against oral cancer.
