Sixty percent (60%) of the area is owned by the Brazalian Government, while the remaining 40% area is owned by 8 nations i.e. Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Nobody owns the Amazon rainforest, it is not property that is up for sale. On the other hand as any landmass on this planet it has been divided up by imaginary boudaries that locate bits of it under the jurisdiction of certain countries (mentioned by other contributers here). And then those countries, particularly Brazil allow coorporations to go in and cut down the trees to build furniture, or plant (I cant remember the species used) for eco fuel, or for farmers to use the land for cattle grazing. There are many different human groups living in the Amazon, from various indigenous groups, to nomadic farmers, miners, caboclos, as well as all the variety of animal species. Wether they are the owners or not is not the point. It’s their home. Ownership and property are not concepts shared by all cultures. Most of the Amazon rainforest is owned by Brazil. Parts belong to Venezuela and other countries as well. Significant portions of this are owned by private parties of various sorts–mostly corporations who do logging, etc.
