FIC and Freelancers Union operate as two separate, distinct companies. Freelancers Union is a nonprofit membership organization that provides advocacy, education, and services to independent workers. FIC is a for-profit health insurance company that provides insurance only to Freelance Union members. FIC was started by, and is wholly owned by, Freelancers Union. Think of Freelancers Union as a Human Resources Department purchasing insurance for its employees, and FIC as an insurance company that provides the insurance.
