Who or what is Lurline in the story of “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire?
Lurline is a character mentioned a couple of times in the original Oz books as a very powerful fairy who built a lot of the cities and set the enchantment over Oz that made the uncrossable desert. In Gregory Macguire’s version of Oz, she is a deity figure central to some sort of old pagan religion. She is generally considered fair, though distant, and every year, her followers celebrate Lurlinemas. The other main Oz religion is Unionism, which worships the harsher, more vengeful Unnamed God. As you get further into the book, you’ll become more familiar with the two religions and Lurline.
