Who Offers DSL?
The competitive telecommunications environment made possible by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 ensures that you’re likely to have a choice of DSL providers. The traditional telephone companies, now the incumbent local exchange carriers, control the local telephone infrastructure, including the central offices and local loops, and are aggressively rolling out DSL services. Examples include the regional Bell operating companies (rbocs) such as Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic) and Pacific Bell. Other companies called competitive local exchange carriers (clecs) compete with the ilecs and co-locate their equipment in the ilec central offices. The clecs lease and install local-loop wiring from the central office to the customer premises in order to provide DSL services. Examples of this type of provider include Covad Communications Company, NorthPoint Communications Group, and Rhythms NetConnections. ilecs and clecs provide the DSL circuits and typically install the wiring and equipment.
