Who needs another compression scheme?
The growth in television channels demands more bandwidth than is often available on current and planned infrastructures. For example, satellite broadcasters face very high launch costs for additional satellites, with dwindling orbital slot availability. Cable providers face very high costs for laying more cable or fiber. AVC provides a relatively low-cost method of (initially) doubling, channel capacity within existing bandwidth constraints, without compromising quality. We’re satisfying the need for more channels by providing high-quality compression systems based on the open AVC standard. The growing demand for HD exacerbates this problem, and AVC will facilitate the broad deployment of HD.
