Who monitors schools and caterers in terms of compliance?
There are a number of stakeholders who will, in all likelihood, become engaged in this whole process. We want to make sure that we have a transparent and robust system and a level playing field, so that it doesn’t matter whether you are an in-house cook or a Local Authority caterer or a private caterer – everyone will be asked to provide the same kind of evidence and this would be shared and publicly available, so that there were not any questions about whether or not the menu was compliant. Ofsted will be monitoring a school’s approach to healthy eating as part of its regular inspection of schools. Within Part C of the Ofsted Self Evaluation Form (SEF) there is a list of the legal requirements a school has to meet. Question 13 Schools have to state stating whether they are compliant with the current DCSF standards for school lunches and/or other school food, where they are responsible for doing so.
