Who may participate in a proceeding under the Kansas Code for Care of Children?
The state, the petitioner, the child and any parent, guardian, or any person who is by law liable to maintain, care for or support of the child is a party to a child in need of care proceeding and may participate. Read Kansas law 38-2202(t) and (u). The state participates in the proceedings through the office of the county or district attorney. Read Kansas law 38-2214 Grandparents of the child shall be allowed to participate as a party to a child in need of care proceeding if the grandparent notifies the court of such grandparent’s desire to become an interested party. Notification may be made in writing, orally or by appearance at the initial or subsequent hearing on the child in need of care petition.
