Who may file Form 2EC?
The Montana elderly homeowner/renter credit is a property tax relief program that provides the taxpayer with a refundable credit, or direct refund, even if they are not required to file a Montana income tax return. To qualify for this credit you will have to answer “Yes” to all four of the following statements: • I was age 62 or older as of December 31, 2008. • I occupied a Montana residence as an owner or renter for a total of six months or more during 2008. • I resided in Montana for nine months or more during 2008. • My gross household income was less than $45,000 in 2008. If you think you may have been eligible for the tax credit in prior years and did not take advantage of it, you are still allowed to file for the credit for up to five years from the original due date of the Form 2EC.
