Who manufactured The Great Garloo toy robot (circa 1961)?
Marx Toy Company. They produced attacking robots, leaping tigers, snapping alligators, and countless other mechanical creatures, including several remote-controlled monsters. The Marx monsters stand out as some of the most handsome and impressive battery-operated toys ever made. Some were mostly tin, such as the 12-inch remote-control Frankenstein. Others were plastic, such as the two-foot tall Great Garloo. And some were plush over mechanical skeletons, like the Yeti and Mighty Kong. Besides walking, they performed other amazing feats. Frankenstein and Garloo could stoop over and pick up objects. Kong could beat his chest. The Spooky Tree whistled and rolled his eyes. And the agitated Yeti would raise his arms and let out the loudest, most blood-curdling SHRIEK that human ear
Great Garloo by Marx. 1961 Hard Plastic 24″ tall. Battery Operated. Goes Forward or backward, turns left & right. Arms open & close, he can bend over to pick up items & carry. Originally came with “Garloo” medallion, wrist chains, cardboard tray, shoulder pads, palms pads & leopard print loin cloth. I remember one of the original commercials showed Garloo carrying a glass of water to the kid. I thought that was just the greatest thing! Boy, did I want him. My mom wouldn’t buy him though, because she thought he was too ugly!
