Who likes to subjugate women more: Christians or Muslims?
Actually, Christ was the one who came into a culture where women were treated as children their entire lives and began to treat them as equals. In the story of Mary and Martha, Martha was the one who was doing what the culture expected of her and Mary was the one who was doing “wrong” in the eyes of her peers. Martha expected Christ to reprimand Mary. Imagine Martha’s surprise when Christ reprimanded her and told her that Mary was doing the right thing. Women weren’t even allowed to sit with the men in the synagogue, but Christ allowed Mary to sit at his feet and receive teaching as though she were as good as a man. Before you start chuckling about sitting as his feet, remember there probably weren’t enough chairs to go around when a crowd was in a home listening to him teach. He was letting her have a place of honor close to Him.
