Dr Robert Duane Ballard, born on 30 June 1942, was educated as a marine geologist and geophysicist. He joined the Navy in 1967, working on undersea projects which included undersea mapping. Using sonar, Ballard located the Titanic about 3,600 metres deep in the North Atlantic Ocean on 1 September 1985.
