Who knew fishing could be a lucrative venture for college students?
Arkansas students Kazuki Kitajima and Bodie Drake represented the university in the BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship and came away with $14,000 in scholarship money for their fishing club. Kiatjima and Drake won September’s championship against a final field that included Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M-Kingsville and defending champion Texas A&M. Kiatjima and Drake caught five bass that weighed in at 17.37 pounds. Included in the haul were two fish just under four pounds each. Nearly 200 anglers competed, representing 23 states and 51 schools. “To win this one means a lot,” Kiatjima said. Texas A&M won last year’s championship. This year the Aggies were runner-up with a catch of 16 pounds. Arkansas was awarded the most money for its win, but other payouts included $8,000, $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000.
