The who is the easy part. The Egyptian radical jihadists had infiltrated the Egyptian army. So when Sadat was reviewing the troops, a group of them broke ranks and rushed the reviewing stand, firing as they went. The whole thing was caught on film. It is very chilling to see, especially the one guy at the end reaching over the front of the stand and spraying it with bullets. As to why, it seems the most plausible reason given was the peace accords with Israel. This group’s idea of peace with Israel is the peace that comes when all Jews are dead. They did not like Sadat’s idea of living in peace with Israel. Since he made peace with Israel, he needed to die, in their minds. So they killed him.
