Who Issues Land Use Permits Under the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act?
The Act provides for the establishment of the Gwich’in Land and Water Board, the Gwich’in Land Use Planning Board, the Sahtu Land and Water Board, the Sahtu Land Use Planning Board, the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board and the Surface Rights Board. As of December 8, 1998, these boards have legislative jurisdiction over land use permitting in the Gwich’in and Sahtu settlement areas. Other boards established include the Dehcho Land Use Planning Board and the Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board in the Wek’èezhìi Management Area. Land use permit applications for activities that will take place wholly within the Gwich’in Settlement Region are submitted to, and permits are issued by, the Gwich’in Land and Water Board.
