Who is Toshiba?
Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese company. However, you may end up dealing with one of their foreign child companies, such as Toshiba America (www.toshiba.com). Although Americans may be accustomed to viewing Toshiba solely as a maker of electronic products, it is actually one of those very old, very large, and very diverse Japanese companies. The Toshiba website offers a historical summary of the company. Notwithstanding their presence in elevators, MRI machines, and turbine generators, consumers are most likely to encounter Toshiba products in the area of laptop computers, computer memory, home entertainment electronics, and (the main point of interest for Backup Critic) optical drives (CD, DVD, etc.). In 2003, Toshiba and Samsung merged their optical disc device businesses. Thus, if you encounter confusion about whether a particular CD or DVD drive is a Toshiba or a Samsung, it may be both!
