Who is the richest fighter in boxing history?
Would you believe Oscar DeLaHoya who is a 10-time world champion and has won six world titles. The Golden Boy earned 53 million dollars last May when he fought Floyd Mayweather, Jr.— $25 million for the fight and $28 million for pay-per-view. Mayweather won a split decision. The 35-year-old DeLaHoya is expected to have two more bouts this year, including a rematch with the unbeaten Mayweather in the fall, and then retire. Oscar has a career record of 38 and 5 with 30 knockouts. A reliable source in boxing surprised me recently when he mentioned in our conversation that Oscar DeLaHoya has never been that much of a draw on his own. It’s been his selection of opponents that has made him successful at the box office. Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas, Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker are the prime examples. You have to give Oscar credit for one thing. He has not ducked anyone. The same cannot be said of all boxing champions.
