Who is the Pepin who replaced the Merovingian clan?
As the Merovingian dynasty aged, the kings became less powerful. The real power in late Merovingian times was the king’s counselor, known as the Mayor of the Palace. The last of these was named Pepin. When the last Merovingian king retired, Pepin (also known as “The Short”), asked Pope Zachary to name him king, which the pope did. This is the begining of the Carolingian Line, whose most important king was Pepin’s son, Charlemagne.
