Who is the original composer for Ave Maria?
The French composer Charles Gounod (1818 – 1893) wrote the most famous version, on a prelude from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. The Bach/Gounod version is the most famous composition on the Ave Maria. Another one was made by Franz Schubert, and yet others are from Heinrich Schütz, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Anton Bruckner, Luigi Cherubini, Antonin Dvorak, Igor Strawinsky, Franz Liszt, and Camille Saint-Saens, to mention just the better-known composers.
