Sméagol (aka Gollum) If you look at the whole of the story, Sméagol is actually the one that found the ring, escorted it back to Mount Doom and, ultimately, was responsible for destroying the ring when Frodo would not and when Gandalf and the Elves could not. Without Sméagol, the ring would not have been destroyed and all would be lost. Of course, it can be argued that he was an accidental hero, but he’s the only character in all three, nay all four, nay even before that! Yes, the Ring destroyed Sméagol, but he also destroyed the Ring. Not Frodo. Not Gandalf. Not the silly pretentious elves. Not the humans.
