Well, I am sure you will get debate from this question. You can’t just pick a drummer because you like the band or the music. In my opinion, you have to know drum rudiments, beats, fills, etc. At the very least, you need to be familiar with the way drumset is scored and played, with all the intricacies. It will still come down to opinion. Buddy Rich, in my opinion, was the best. He syncopated rhythms that were unbeleivable. He was so fast, it was difficult to know which rhythms he was playing, but when recorded, you could break them down and see his amazing talent. If you are truly interested in the best drummer to help yourself play better, really study the beats, the speed, the syncopation, and not just the band you like the most. Some of the most notable drummers in history (Ringo Star) are notable because of their bands and history, but are considered average drummers at best, they just fell into stardome and it propelled them to fame.
