Dr. Norman J. Holter is credited for inventing a portable ambulatory electrocardiography device which can monitor heartbeats for periods of time in excess of 24 hrs, making it more effective at locating irregular heartbeats than the previous machines. Using a series of electrodes, it records electrical signals from the heart and keeps a log of that activity. In conjunction with the diary the patient keeps of when they sleep, exercise, eat, and work, the doctors are able to determine which sequence of events may be related to the irregular heartbeat. Generally people prefer to wear bulkier clothing as this device is strapped to the chest of each patient, and they are often self conscious of their appearance while wearing it.
