Who is the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and what is their role in protecting the environment?
DEP was formed in 1993, through a merger of the Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Regulation. The Mission of the DEP is:”More Protection, Less Process”The DEP promotes stewardship, or public ownership, of Florida s ecosystems so that: • the state s unique quality of life may be preserved for both present and future generations; • protects the public health and safety; • provides for the responsible and wise use of the state s mineral, cultural and living resources; • and provides consistent and impartial implementation of state rules and regulations. The Environmental Regulation Commission (ERC) is the rule making arm of the DEP for rules that establish environmental standards, such as the DEP s water body classifications, and its air and water quality standards. The ERC s membership is composed of seven citizens of the state who are appointed by the Governor for 4-year terms, and are subject to confirmation by the Senate.
