Tonga has crowned a new king in an elaborate Christian ceremony. A gold crown was placed on the oil-anointed head of King George Tupou V while he sat on a large gold throne in the capital’s Centenary Church, the Associated Press reported. The coronation also included a choir of more than 300. During the ceremony the Archbishop of Polynesia Jabez Bryce proclaimed the king had been “anointed, blessed and consecrated” to rule the South Pacific nation, AP reported. Thousands of Tongans lined the route to the church, waving flags and balloons. It is the first coronation in Tonga since 1967 when the current king’s father, the late King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV, was crowned. The family line dates back to the 17th century. More than 5000 people travelled to Tonga for the event. Royalty from other countries who attended include Japan’s Crown Naruhito, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, New Zealand’s Maori King Tuheitia and Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, representing Queen Elizab
