(Micah, Frederick) • SMITH: That’s the kind of question that gets discussions started. Consulting with the long-time writer/editor in my department, we narrowed it down to three guys: Walkersville’s Gordon Smith and Thomas Johnson’s Mike Rice and Terence Morris. Each came from a different era. Smith was a guard in the mid-1960s who went on to the University of Cincinnati, then was drafted by the Celtics and made the team during the Red Auerbach heyday. Rice was a Patriots center in the mid-70s who later started as a freshman at Pittsburgh before switching schools. He never made it to the NBA, which Morris did after a solid career as a forward at the University of Maryland. He was drafted in the second round of the 2002 NBA draft and played parts of three seasons with the Rockets and Magic, and now plays professionally overseas. Smith, Rice and Morris were dominating prep players who each took their teams to at least one state title. This answer does not include Linganore’s Joe Alexande
